Frequently asked questions
Good questions. Straightforward answers.
From your first profile to your next exchange, here are the things people want to know about Skill x Swap.
Membership, exchanges & credits
Is Skill x Swap free to join?
Yes. Global membership is free, with no membership subscription. Reciprocal exchanges are always free. New Global members start with zero credits.
What is a reciprocal swap?
Two members each teach a skill the other wants to learn. Both selected skills must match their profiles. No credits are spent, and each session is confirmed by both members.
What if I only want to learn?
You can request a one-way exchange to learn a skill another member offers. You'll need 1 available credit to send the request. You can earn credits by teaching, or purchase additional credits through your wallet.
How do credits work?
One-way learning costs 1 credit, reserved when you send the request. The teacher earns 1 credit only after both members confirm the session is complete. Reciprocal swaps use no credits.
How do I earn credits?
Teach a one-way session and have both you and your learning partner confirm completion. You then earn 1 credit in that community’s wallet.
Can I buy credits?
One-off Global credit packages are 1 credit for £1.99, 3 for £4.99, 8 for £9.99 and 20 for £19.99. Members do not buy personal credits inside Workplace or Programme communities.
Do purchased credits expire?
No. Purchased credits do not expire. They belong to your Global wallet and cannot be transferred to another community’s wallet.
Can I teach more than one skill?
Yes. You can list multiple skills you can share and multiple skills you want to learn, and update these in your profile.
What if my skill isn't listed?
You can add a new skill when selecting your skills in the application. Existing names are checked to help avoid duplicates.
Can exchanges happen online or in person?
Both are possible. Members choose their preferences and agree an arrangement that suits them. Availability depends on the people, skills and locations involved; a particular exchange is not guaranteed.
How do I arrange an exchange?
Discover a member, send a swap request, and use your private conversation to agree the details. Once accepted, you can record a date, online or in-person format, location or link, and notes. Each session in a reciprocal swap is arranged separately.
What happens if a swap is cancelled?
A declined one-way request returns the reserved credit to the learner. An eligible cancellation also returns it. Completed sessions cannot simply be cancelled to reverse their credits. See the Terms of Use for the cancellation and credit-purchase terms, or contact support about a particular exchange.
What is the Skills Passport?
It is your record of completed exchanges: skills learned, skills shared, completed swaps and countries connected through your exchange partners. Pending or cancelled swaps do not count. It is a personal learning record, not a formal qualification.
Is Skill x Swap available internationally?
Skill x Swap is a worldwide community. You can connect across borders, particularly through online exchanges, depending on member availability, language and time zones. Members must be aged 18 or over.
What is the difference between Global and Workplace/Programme communities?
Global is the community individuals join for personal skills exchange. Workplace is intended for colleagues; Programmes supports a defined cohort or initiative. These private communities are set up directly with us, not through self-service organisation signup. Membership, exchanges and wallets are scoped to each community; joining a private community does not automatically enrol you in Global.
How do I contact support?
Email hello@skillxswap.com for member support, general questions, organisation enquiries or partnerships. There is no need to share passwords or payment-card details.
